As January begins, it's a time that many of us set priorities and establish goals for the upcoming year, and businesses are no different. It's also the perfect time to reflect on the environmental impact a business can make and consider creating sustainability pledges to reduce emissions, encourage sustainable practices, and contribute positively to the planet.

Here are 7 resolutions your business can introduce to help create a sustainable future.

  1. Switch to LED lighting
By using 85% less electricity than halogen lights, LED lights are very energy efficient. Making this switch means that electricity bills will be lower, making it good for your pocket and planet!
  1. Cut down on single-use plastics
It is nearly impossible to eliminate plastic completely, but we can all do more to reduce consumption. Global production of primary plastic is estimated to reach 1.1 billion tonnes by 2050. Encouraging staff members to switch to refillable water bottles instead of single-use cups and bottles could be just one way to make this crucial change.
  1. Explore renewable energy providers
Consider switching to green energy suppliers that use renewable sources to provide their energy. This may not be possible for everyone, but if it is within your control, it's a simple step you can take to reduce your impact, increase your brand reputation, and save you money over time.

  2. Donate, recycle, and reduce e-waste
Do not throw away your electronic waste! You should always look to recycle e-waste at dedicated collection points. Alternatively, household waste recycling centres and some local supermarkets will offer a similar service, allowing you to recycle appliances like kettles or microwaves and electronic gadgets such as mobile phones, laptops, and tablets. Why not have an office clear-out day to make sure that e-waste like old cables make it to the right place. You can also purchase refurbished tech instead of brand-new products. Buying refurbished items will save you significant costs while also being good for the environment.
  1. Minimise waste and increase recycling
Recycling isn’t just for e-waste. You can keep all other forms of waste to a minimum by reducing, reusing, and recycling where possible. Arrange clearly labelled recycling bins in the office, create a digital workflow instead of relying on a paper trail, and ensure food waste is composted effectively. Check out your local council website to make sure you’re recycling in the right way.

  2. Opt for sustainable transportation
Consider incentivising a cycle-to-work scheme among your colleagues, meaning that those who take it up can earn rewards. You can also encourage employees to carpool, use public transport, or transition to an electric vehicle. Switching to a hybrid working model or fully remote can also reduce your commuting emissions, depending on the business needs.

  3. Consider second-hand and pre-loved items
When looking for items to furnish your team office or work-from-home space, consider buying from second-hand marketplaces or charity shops. Alternatively, you could even try building something yourself or upcycling an item to give it a fresh look!

These resolutions not only contribute towards a better planet, but can also improve business operations, lower costs, increase awareness with your staff, and enhance brand reputation in a market that is becoming more environmentally conscious.
