Why carbon management matters in Great Britain

The UK is embedding climate action across the economy, and most businesses are unaware.

Three pieces of UK climate reporting have come into force or expanded in the last 24 months. Together, they affect any business that bids for public contracts, sells to the NHS, employs over 250 people, or sits in the supply chain of someone who does.

PPN 006

Public sector procurement

Any UK government contract above £5 million now requires a Carbon Reduction Plan. PPN 006 (formerly PPN 06/21) sets the format and methodology.

Affects: ~50,000 UK suppliers to government and NHS
UK SRS

Mandatory sustainability reporting

The UK Sustainability Reporting Standards (replacing TCFD) are being phased in for listed companies and larger private businesses. As expectations evolve, Scope 3 emissions is becoming increasingly important. Many organisations are beginning to request this information from their suppliers.

Affects: All UK premium-listed companies + their supply chains
SECR

Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting

If you employ 250+ people, or turn over £36m+, or have a balance sheet above £18m, you have to report energy use and Scope 1, 2 and some Scope 3 emissions in your annual accounts. These disclosures form part of annual reporting requirements and are reviewed by Companies House and external auditors.

Affects: ~11,900 UK large undertakings
Cost of inaction

Carbon is increasingly part of doing business

It’s becoming increasingly common for UK businesses to be asked for emissions data as part of tendering and supplier requirements. Larger organisations are placing greater emphasis on Scope 3 reporting, meaning suppliers are increasingly expected to provide reliable emissions information as part of ongoing commercial relationships.

What you get

Six outcomes Climate Essentials delivers for UK businesses.

Focus on what matters in practice: the evidence needed for tenders, audits, and supplier approval.

01

Full Scope 1, 2 and 3 measurement

GHG Protocol-aligned, using DEFRA conversion factors. Spend-based and activity-based methodologies for Scope 3, with intelligent estimation where data is incomplete.

02

An Interactive Reduction Plan

Create a carbon reduction plan, compliant with PPN 006, that actually gets you to net zero.

03

SECR reporting outputs

The energy and carbon disclosures you need for your Companies House annual filing, verified by our climate team.

04

Verified, audit-ready data

Independent verification of your footprint by our in-house verification team, giving you the assurance you need that your numbers are right.

05

A Scope 3 supplier engagement tool

Send measurement requests to suppliers, monitor responses, and consolidate the data into your footprint. This aligns with the tools increasingly being used across supply chains.

06

A net-zero pathway you'll actually follow

Science-based net zero targets, intervention modelling, and a year-on-year tracking dashboard. Not just a compliance document you file and forget. Beyond a one-off compliance exercise

Frequently asked

Questions UK businesses actually ask us.

A FAQ grounded in what UK businesses are actually asking.

Will this actually be accepted for PPN 006?

Yes. The Carbon Reduction Plan template we generate as part of our managed services follows the exact structure the Cabinet Office published under PPN 006 (previously known as PPN 06/21). It includes baseline emissions for Scope 1, 2 and the required Scope 3 categories: business travel, employee commuting, upstream transport and distribution, waste, downstream transport and distribution; a stated commitment to net zero by 2050, and the environmental management measures you have in place.

Over a thousand organisations use Climate Essentials, including suppliers who have won government contracts using our outputs.

What's the difference between UK SRS and TCFD?

UK SRS, the UK Sustainability Reporting Standards, is the UK's implementation of the international ISSB standards (IFRS S1 and S2). It is replacing the TCFD framework that UK-listed companies previously reported against.

The biggest practical change: Scope 3 emissions disclosure becomes mandatory, with much greater detail required than under TCFD. If you previously reported under TCFD, UK SRS is the more demanding successor, and it will reach your suppliers too.

I'm an SME with no sustainability team. Can we actually do this ourselves?

Yes, that's exactly who Climate Essentials was built for. The Self-Serve tier starts at just £132/year and is designed for someone in finance or operations (not a sustainability specialist) to complete a full carbon footprint and PPN 006 plan with about two hours of their time.

If you want it done for you, the Managed tier puts a dedicated climate consultant on your account.

What conversion factors do you use, and how often are they updated?

We use the UK Government / DEFRA greenhouse gas conversion factors for company reporting, updated annually when the new dataset is published (usually June/July). Spend-based factors are derived from the latest UK Environmentally Extended Input-Output tables.

The Climate Science team at Climate Essentials reviews and implements each annual update — you don't need to. Historical footprints are recalculated using the original year's factors so your year-on-year comparisons remain valid.

Do you offer verification? Can you certify our numbers?

Yes. We have an in-house verification service that issues GHG Protocol or ISO 14064-3 aligned verification statements. This matters when a listed customer, auditor or large procurement team asks for third-party assurance on your numbers.

Verification is included in the Managed Service, or as an add-on to Self-Serve.

We bid for NHS contracts. Is PPN 006 the only thing we need?

For most NHS supplier requirements, a PPN 006 Carbon Reduction Plan is the floor, not the ceiling.

NHS England operates the Evergreen Sustainable Supplier Assessment, which expects suppliers to demonstrate ongoing emissions reduction, supply chain engagement, and a credible net zero pathway. Climate Essentials generates the PPN 006 plan you need to bid and the ongoing measurement and reduction tracking the Evergreen assessment expects.

We have a dedicated NHS Suppliers page if your bidding focuses there.
