Carbon accounting for
manufacturers.

SECR, PPN 006 and European supply chain regulations like the CSRD mean manufacturers need auditable emissions data across energy, materials, logistics and suppliers. Climate Essentials helps you measure your Scope 1, 2 and 3 footprint, produce compliant reports and respond to buyer requests, without adding headcount.

What your buyers and regulators expect:

  • SECR-compliant energy and emissions disclosure
  • Carbon Reduction Plans for PPN 006 and large buyer tenders
  • Scope 3 supply chain data for CSRD and buyer due diligence

How Climate Essentials helps

Carbon reporting built for the complexity of manufacturing

Six ways we help manufacturers collect, manage and report emissions data across energy, materials, logistics and supply chains.

Measure energy-intensive operations

Track emissions from electricity, gas, fuel, process heating, refrigeration and on-site generation across factories, production lines and warehouses. The platform handles the conversion factors so you focus on the data, not the methodology.

Track raw materials and upstream sourcing

For most manufacturers, purchased goods and materials represent the largest share of Scope 3 emissions. Capture these through spend-based estimates initially, then improve accuracy with supplier-specific data over time.

Engage your supply chain

Engage with your suppliers directly to collect data. Build a verifiable Scope 3 footprint and replace spend-based estimates with actuals, which is what large buyers and CSRD-reporting customers increasingly require.

SECR and PPN 006 reporting, handled

Produce SECR-compliant energy and emissions disclosures, Carbon Reduction Plans for PPN 006 tenders, and automated reports for board and investor use. The platform formats the outputs so your team does not need to build them from scratch.

Respond to buyer sustainability requests

Large buyers, retailers and CSRD-reporting customers are asking manufacturers for emissions data as part of procurement and supplier onboarding. Your data is always measured, current and exportable, so you can respond in hours, not weeks.

Identify reductions that cut emissions and cost

See where your biggest emissions sit across energy, logistics, waste, raw materials and procurement. Create realistic reduction actions, track progress year on year, and evidence improvement to buyers and regulators.

Why UK manufacturers are measuring carbon

Four reasons to kickstart your decarbonisation journey

UK regulation applies

If your business qualifies for SECR, you already have a legal obligation to disclose energy use and carbon emissions. PPN 006 requires a Carbon Reduction Plan for government contract bids above £5 million. UK regulation is increasingly asking businesses to measure their footprint.

Your buyers are asking for data

European regulations like the CSRD are requiring large buyers to report on their supply chain emissions. That pressure flows directly to UK manufacturers. This puts pressure on businesses to provide auditable carbon data when a customer asks.

Carbon reduction means cost reduction

In manufacturing, your biggest emissions sources are often your biggest cost lines: energy, logistics, waste and raw materials. Measuring them gives you the data to act on both problems at once. Most manufacturers find cost savings they were not looking for.

Win contracts and unlock new business

Tenders for public sector, defence, retail and large corporate supply chains now weight sustainability criteria alongside price, quality and delivery. Manufacturers with verified carbon data and a documented reduction plan are better positioned to win contracts.

Frequently asked

Questions manufacturers actually ask us.

SECR, CSRD, Scope 3, supply chain measurement, answered simply.

Do UK manufacturers need to measure their carbon footprint?

Many already do. If your business qualifies for SECR, you have a legal obligation to disclose energy use and carbon emissions in your annual accounts. If you bid on government contracts above £5 million, PPN 006 requires a published Carbon Reduction Plan.

On top of that, European regulations like the CSRD are requiring large buyers to report on their supply chain emissions. That pressure flows directly to UK manufacturers. Even if you are not legally required to measure today, your customers may already need your data.

What is SECR and does it apply to our business?

SECR (Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting) applies to UK companies and LLPs that meet two or more of the following: more than 250 employees, turnover above £36 million, or a balance sheet above £18 million. Qualifying organisations must report energy consumption and associated greenhouse gas emissions in their annual directors' report.

Many mid-sized and large manufacturers meet these thresholds. Climate Essentials produces SECR-compliant outputs covering Scope 1, Scope 2 and relevant Scope 3 emissions, along with an intensity ratio and a narrative on energy efficiency measures.

What emissions should a manufacturer measure?

Manufacturing emissions typically cover electricity, gas, fuel (including diesel, gas oil and LPG), process heating, refrigerant losses, fleet vehicles, business travel, employee commuting, waste, water, raw materials, purchased goods and services, upstream transport and distribution, and subcontractor activity.

The platform uses DEFRA conversion factors and supports spend-based, activity-based, weight-based, distance-based and fuel-based calculation methods. You do not need perfect data across every category to start. Begin with what you have and improve accuracy over time.

Our customers are asking for emissions data because of CSRD. What does that mean for us?

The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) requires large European companies to report on their full value chain emissions, including data from suppliers. If your customers fall under CSRD, they are now required to collect emissions data from their supply chain, and that includes you.

This is not a one-off request. It will become an annual reporting requirement for your customers, which means they will need your data every year. Climate Essentials helps you produce exportable emissions data that satisfies these requests without creating a significant internal workload each time.

Can you help us measure emissions across our own supply chain?

Yes. Climate Essentials for Supply Chains is a dedicated platform that lets you invite your own suppliers to report their emissions directly. Instead of relying on industry-average spend-based estimates, you get primary supplier data that is far more accurate and defensible.

The platform includes an interactive supplier dashboard so you can see your full supply chain emissions in one place, identify high-intensity suppliers, understand each supplier's decarbonisation trajectory, and align their reduction efforts with your own targets. This is especially valuable for manufacturers where purchased goods, raw materials and upstream logistics often make up the majority of Scope 3.

We do not have a sustainability team. Can we manage this internally?

Yes. The platform is designed for someone in operations, finance or quality management to complete a full carbon footprint and SECR-compliant disclosure without specialist sustainability knowledge. The interface guides you through each emissions category step by step.

If you would prefer it handled externally, the Managed Service puts a dedicated climate consultant on your account. They collect your data, build your footprint, produce your reports and handle your SECR narrative. Many manufacturers start with the Managed Service for the first year and then move to self-serve once the process is established.

What does it cost?

The self-serve platform starts from £132 per year.

The Managed Service, Verification and Supply Chain platform are available at tailored quotes. All are priced to be accessible for SME and mid-market manufacturers, not at the rates you would expect from a Big Four consultancy.

How long does it take to get our first footprint?

On the self-serve platform, most manufacturers complete their first footprint within a few days to four weeks depending on data availability and operational complexity. Manufacturing businesses typically have more emissions categories to cover than service-based firms, but the platform walks you through each one.

With the Managed Service, our team typically delivers a complete verified footprint and SECR-compliant report within 5 days. The main variable is how quickly you can provide activity data such as energy bills, fuel records, waste transfer notes, materials spend and logistics data.
