In November 2023, Climate Essentials visited the Transputec offices to discuss the team’s experience being part of the Brent for Business Energy Saving Scheme. Transputec were recipients of an energy audit of their office building and access to the Climate Essentials platform which enabled them to measure, track and reduce their carbon emissions. We spoke with Pamila Khosla, Client Success Officer at Transputec, and Sharon Campbell, PMO Manager, about their experience on the programme and the support they received.

How and why did Transputec take action?

Public sector requirements and tenders are increasingly asking for ISO 14001 certification. This was a major driver in the Transputec team deciding to take action to become more sustainable and get involved in the Brent support scheme. ISO 14001 sets out the criteria for an environmental management system that organisations can follow. By certifying to ISO 14001, organisations can provide assurance to stakeholders and the public sector.

Another driver was Transputec’s Chairman, who is passionate about creating a positive legacy for the future. Reducing Transputec’s carbon footprint and becoming a sustainable business was a big part of this.

Transputec were invited to join an energy saving scheme operated by Brent Council while looking for ways to reduce their energy usage and carbon footprint. As part of this scheme,  Transputec benefited from funding towards the installation of solar panels. After this, Transputec was introduced to the Climate Essentials platform, enabling them to calculate their carbon emissions and develop a long term reduction plan.

“The support provided by Brent Council was really, really good. Then as we progressed into the Climate Essentials platform, the team was fantastic. I was very well supported by everybody who has helped us reach where we are today.” - Pamila Khosla, Client Success Officer

Businesses who sign the Brent Business Climate Charter are eligible for a free Climate Essentials licence. In addition, businesses receive support sessions with the Climate Essentials team, ongoing dedicated email support, access to the exclusive Net Zero Community, including monthly webinars, and a resource pack.

Programme outcomes

Since using Climate Essentials and receiving support from Brent Council, Transputec has made some great progress towards their decarbonisation goals. Sharon and the team have set their focus on their Scope 3 emissions specifically, making this a priority in their reduction plans. Transputec has changed all lighting from fluorescent to LEDs, improved recycling of waste, installed solar panels, and electrified their fleet, including installing charging points in the carpark. Alongside this, Transputec encourages their team to take part in carbon reducing initiatives such as going paperless, keeping the heating under 20 degrees, and walking, cycling or carpooling to work.

“We’ve seen some great benefits: We’ve seen a huge reduction in the kilowatts that we use. That’s obviously translated into a cost saving as well, so that’s been great for our bottom line.” - Pamila Khousla, Client Success Officer

Transputec has recorded a 38% reduction in the kilowatts that they use. Over a period of five years the business expects to see a return on the investment made installing solar panels. Even more exciting, at that point the building should be generated entirely from renewable energy.

Transputec has now set a carbon reduction target in line with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The SBTi helps organisations set emission targets that are aligned with the outcomes of the Paris Agreement, to help limit global warming to 1.5 ℃. In the Climate Essentials platform Transputec were able to report on the Scope 1, 2 and 3 data required to set a Science Based Target and visualise their pathway to net zero in accordance with this target.
